"Deep work" is a term popularised by author and computer scientist Cal Newport. It describes focused, distraction-free work on something cognitively demanding: writing, studying, coding, planning, creating. It's where most meaningful progress happens, and it's increasingly rare because of constant interruptions.
Deep work vs shallow work
Shallow work is easy to do while distracted: emails, messages, admin, scrolling for "research". Deep work needs your full attention and produces real results. Most people spend most of their day on shallow work without realising it.
How to start your first deep work session
- Choose one important task and write the specific outcome, e.g. "finish the outline for chapter two".
- Schedule it. Put a 45–60 minute block in your calendar, ideally at the time of day you're most alert.
- Remove distractions first. Phone in another room, notifications off, email and chat closed, one tab open.
- Use a start ritual. The same drink, playlist or desk each time helps your brain settle faster.
- Keep a Later List for stray thoughts.
- Stop at the end of the block, write a one-line note of where you're up to, then take a real break.
Build up gradually
If you're used to constant switching, an hour of deep work may feel very hard at first. Start with 25–30 minutes and add time as it gets easier. Two good sessions a day is a strong result for most people.
Protect your deep work time
- Batch shallow work into set times (e.g. email at 11:00 and 16:00).
- Tell people when you're unavailable, and when you'll get back to them.
- Track your deep work hours each week. What gets measured tends to grow.
