Some days you can't concentrate on anything. You read the same paragraph three times, drift to your phone, and feel frustrated with yourself. Poor focus usually has a cause, and often more than one. Here are the most common, with a fix for each.
1. Your phone is within reach
Even a silent phone on the desk can pull at your attention. Fix: put it in another room for your next work session.
2. Too many notifications
Every alert invites a switch, and getting back into deep work takes time. Fix: turn off everything non-essential and use Do Not Disturb while you work.
3. You're trying to do several things at once
Multitasking feels productive but usually slows you down and increases mistakes. Fix: choose one task and keep a Later List for everything else.
4. The task isn't clear
"Work on project" is vague, so your mind looks for something easier. Fix: write the very next physical action, like "draft the first paragraph".
5. You're tired
Poor or short sleep makes concentration much harder. Fix: protect a regular bedtime, keep screens out of the last hour, and do demanding work when you're most alert.
6. You're stressed or your mind is full
Worries compete for your attention. Fix: do a five-minute brain dump on paper before you start, then take three slow breaths.
7. You haven't moved, eaten or had water
Hunger, dehydration and sitting still for hours can drain focus. Fix: a glass of water, a snack and a two-minute walk.
8. Your sessions are too long
Expecting three hours of perfect focus sets you up to fail. Fix: work in 25–45 minute sprints with real breaks.
When to get support
If poor concentration is constant, affects your work or relationships, or comes with low mood, anxiety, or long-standing difficulty with attention and organisation, it's worth talking to your GP or a qualified professional. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and ADHD can all affect focus, and support is available.
