Do you open your phone for one thing and suddenly realise 30 minutes have disappeared?
Short videos, notifications and constant scrolling train your attention to keep looking for the next interesting thing.
Then normal activities—reading, studying, working or even watching a full movie—can start feeling unusually difficult.
The good news is that your attention can be trained again.
Start With One Hour
Don't try to quit your phone completely.
Choose one hour every day when you deliberately stay away from short-form content.
No TikTok.
No Reels.
No Shorts.
No endless scrolling.
Use that hour for something slower:
- Reading
- Walking
- Studying
- Exercise
- Writing
- Cleaning
- Working on a goal
The important thing is not what you choose.
You're teaching your mind that it doesn't need constant stimulation.
Stop Switching Tasks
If you're working, work.
If you're eating, eat.
If you're watching something, watch it.
Try not to constantly switch between your task, messages, notifications and social media.
Every time you resist switching, you are practising attention.
Use the 20-Minute Rule
Choose one important task.
Put your phone somewhere you cannot easily reach it.
Set a timer for 20 minutes.
For those 20 minutes, do only that task.
When the timer ends, take a short break.
Then repeat.
Don't worry about being perfectly focused.
The goal is simply to keep returning your attention to one thing.
Make Scrolling Harder
Remove social-media apps from your home screen.
Turn off unnecessary notifications.
Keep your phone away from your bed.
Log out of apps that you constantly open automatically.
Small amounts of friction can interrupt unconscious scrolling.
Try This Today
For the next 24 hours:
Choose one hour with no short-form content.
During that hour, complete one meaningful activity without switching between apps.
That's enough to begin.
You don't need to completely change your life today.
You need to start training your attention again.
More-Self Principle
Attention grows where you repeatedly place it.
Protect it.
Train it.
Use it on things that are building your life.
More-Self — Train your mind. Build better habits. Become more of yourself.
